Joel Frahm Trio: Illumination

Possessor of one of the warmest tones on the tenor sax, Joel Frahm displays his wares on a classy trio album with Dan Loomis/b and Ernesto Cervini/dr on ten post bop originals. Frahm hovers like the Goodyear Blimp on the rubato of “Vesper Flights” while the biceps pop as he arm wrestles with Cervini on “Catch 22”. Frahm’s lyricism gives an aria on the ballad “Moonface Lament” as he digs into warm magma, while he reworks  a jazz standard over Cervini’s deft brush work on “Kern You Dig It”. Some hip high hat cuts a groove on “Disco Nern” and the team gits kinetic for the bopping “The Nurse Is In” while the band skips and cantors like galloping deer through “Loo-Lee”. Like molasses flowing out of the bottle.
