Jocelyn Gould:  Portrait of Right Now

Canadian guitarist Jocelyn Gould puts out a fun one, singing and playing a bopping guitar with Will Bonness/p, Jared Beckstaead-Craan/b and Curtis Nowosad/dr on a mix of mostly originals and a couple standards. The two jazz pieces show where Gould’s heart lays, as Wes Montgomery’s “Jingles” is a well dug rivulet of swing, and an indie-voiced take of “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” is as cozy by the fire as you can get. She’s also easy on the ears when she relaxes on the couch during “Spring It Seems”, while the rest of the album, she’s bopping till she’s dropping, giving some cool clear lines over the brushes on “You’re No Fun At All”, clear and classy around the cymbals during “Io’s Orbit” and hitting the right stride on “Early Bird”. When’s she hitting the road? Classy lassie!
