Composer and band leader Hyeseon Hong puts together a clever and swingingly modern team that includes guest saxist Rich Perry. He’s not the only one that sines, but his work on the dramatic “Memories of Ladies” and romantic “Night Climbing” are indeed impressive. The post bopping “Run Away” has a snappy solo by alto saxist “Alejandro Aviles”, and the elegiac and flute filled “Waltzing With Dad” has David Smith’s flugelhorn serenading gallantly. Some noir moods get hip on the sharp “ Road to Hana” with some swaggering trombone and trumpet work, while hazy shadows on “Raindrops’ Journey” includes Broc’s Hampel’s lyrical piano. Fresh charts.
