Alex Sipiagin: Horizons

Playing trumpet and flugelhorn, Alex Sipiagin brings together an A-list of gents in Chris Potter/ts-ss, John Escreet/p-key, Eric Harland/dr and Matt Brewer/b for an album of originals and a pair of Metheny tunes.

The selection of Metheny material is interesting, with the band sounding like Miles Davis ESP-era on the sharp cornered “While You Weren’t Looking” while Sipiagin’s flugelhorn is fluffy and soft on the graceful “ When Is It Now?”. Escreet’s keyboards are pretty with Potter’s soprano on “Oversen” and both piano and keys canter with the tenor on “Clean Cut”. There is a three part “Horizon” suite with the band going in fragmented directions on “1”, synthscapes and dots and dashes on “2” and Sipiagin muting the horn over Harland’s simmering sticks on “”3” Musical intricacies.
