Vincent Ingala: Escape With Me

Tenor saxist Vincent Ingala delivers a funkified new release, even including a classic doo wop tune in the mix on this danceable disc. Not only is Ingala impressive on the sax, but he plays every instrument on the session, but if you didn’t know that ahead of time you might think that this was a long time touring unit; the feel is that tight and in sync. While the “band” stays the same, each tune has its own distinct personality and feel.  There’s a Donna Summer-inspired disco stomper in “Free” that has vocalist Lindsey Webster cooing over the sizzling pulse, while a Doobie Brothers riff in “Ramp It Up” has the leader belting out a rich solo. Ingala’s tenor tone is reminiscent of Gato Barbieri, strong and sensuous, getting romantic on a synth’s groove of “Escape With Me” while blue and dramatic during “Midnight Confession”. The Doo Wopper “La La (Means I Love You)” is upbeat, up-tempo and uptown. He sounds at times like he’s literally singing through his tenor, with a patented electronic tone exuded from the reeds on the infectious “Fantasy Or Reality” and rollicking “Let’s Get To It”. It’s a clever signature and it works well on a unison line with the keyboards on the steady “That Familiar Feeling”. Strong and flexible muscles.
