Drummer Sean Noonan forms a trio with pianist Matthew Bourne and bassist Michael Bardon in which his compositions feature him, well, if not singing, then at least using vocal messages in a wild and adventurous way that sounds like if The Bad Plus went bohemian or avant garde.
There are rapid double time grooves mixed with vocal refrains on a mercurial “Drunkard Landlady”, while the title tracks twists and turns around Bardon’s bowing bass. A cascading “White Light” is filled with intense drama, and you better hang on tight for the white knuckler ride of “Aqua Dive”. Moods get a little Middle Eastern on the exotic “Tell Me” with Bourne probes into deep dark corners on “Crossroads”. A soundtrack for Hans Conried?
