Playing trumpet and flugelhorn, Michael Sarian wins the crowd over at Detroit’s Cliff Bell’s club back in 2023 with a quartet including Santiago Leibson/p, Marty Kenney/b and Nathan Ellman-Bell/dr. The music has an almost suite-like feel to it, as the tunes are interwoven together, sometimes by Leibson’s mysterious piano or Kennye’s dug in bass. Sarian has a warm Blue Mitchell/Kenny Dorham feel and tone, bopping confidently on “Primo” and thoughtfully bluesy for “Aurora” with a dash of Middle Eastern exoticism for “Yis Ku Ghimetn Chim Gidi”. The team builds up to a dramatic climax on the rubato’d “Glass Mountains” while swinging easy on “Living At The End Of The World”. A well knit tapestry.
