Jerome Sabbagh: Heart

Usually, tenor sax trios lean towards overindulgence, but Jerome Sabbagh displays wisdom in restraint with his band of veteran Al Foster/dr and Joe Marti/dr. The best card in Sabbagh’s hand is his tone, soft, warm and fluffy like a Don Byas or Gene Ammos. He floates on and understated read of “Prelude To A Kiss” and glides over the cool pulse of “ESP”. Martin is a lithe guiding force, giving space for the leader’s own’ Right The First Time” and “Heart” with Foster’s brushes dusting off the excess. A glorious take of “Body and Soul” flickers like a candle, while “When Lights Are Low” are is wisely held back a notch. A chord of three strings is not easily broken.
