Trumpeter Jeff Kaiser teams up with the voice of Paul J. Botelho to create a pair of improvised pieces that take you on thoughtful journeys on this latest released. The duo got together to record the pieces in an abandoned WWII munitions bunker, of which the dimensions make the music sound as if Miles Davis stepped into a wind tunnel. The clear toned Kaiser creates open horn and muted effects on his trumpet, bringing even mouthpiece effects that may be mistaken for electronics, juxtaposed with Botelh’s countertenor voice forming ethereal juxtapositions on “For Alvira, Part 1” that mix serenity with sonority. The shorter “For Alvira, Part II” has Kaiser in a clarion call forming ideas that range from palpably rich textures to squeezed out cries, as Botelho forms a vocal frame that stretches from Gregorian chants of the 21st Century to breezes eking through cracks in an abandoned farm house. Ambience with ambition.
