Composer Elisabet Curbelo brings in a wide kaleidoscope of colorful sounds on her debut release. The songs are reflections of the wide world of places she has lived, with the ears being taken on a wide world tour. “Canarian Bayram”, for example, is an orchestral theme conducted by Jason Missal with woodwinds and guitars wafting in a cirrus cloud of dreams. High in the fascinating rhythm department is a juxtaposition of Beatriz Lopez Salinas’ flamenco footwork mixing with electronic synth sounds to create a clever contrast of rhythms on “Fatasia Flamenca”, while Curbelo’s own electronic works on “Roxanne’nin Donusmumu” radiate currents of palpable heat. The RENGA Ensemble, conducted by Steven Schick has harmonies and percussion that take you to East Asia, while the string instrument kanun teams with Curbelo’s voice for an eerie and haunting “Kara Toprak”.
