Trombonist Conrad Herwig throws some salsa on the McCoy Tyner songbook with a core unit of Robby Ameen/dr, Ruben Rodriguez/b, Bill O’Connell/p, Camilo Molina/perc, Alex Norris/tp-fh and Craig Handy/ts-bars, and it works glowingly. Pianist Eddie Palmieri guests on the dark and ominous “Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit”, and Molina adds changing vocals to the sizzling saunter of an Afro Cuban “African Village”. The timbales tickle the fun and festive “Blues On The Corner” with the leader in bold colors for “Passion Dance” and O’Connell in a Tyner mood around the lurking horns on “Fly With The Wind”. Why does the “Latin Tinge” make everything better?
