Bob Baldwin: It’s Okay To Dream, Songs My Father Would Dig

Bob Baldwin is one of those guys w hoi’s made a steady career out of music even though he’s never been a “big” name. Hard working and talented, he’s content to simply carve out a career niche. Here are two recent albums of his that show the character of an artist that’s also a fan.

It’s Okay To Dream has Baldwin playing piano, keyboards, bass, drums and even singing a bit as he mixes and matches with the likes of Jimmy Dludlu/g-voc, Rick Watford/g, Larry Jackson/as, Q Coleman/voc-key, Fred Vigdor/as, Dr. Derek Scott/g and others. He even goes solo, playing just all of the instruments on a pretty title tune, and “That One”, duetting with Watford on an R&Bish ”Turnup the Positive” , and leading various soulful trios as on the disco’d “Get The Love” and My Will”. Lots of deep grooves.

Songs My Father Would Digteams Baldwon with Tony Lewis/dr, Richie Goods/b, and Edson da Silva on a mix of originals and hip standards. There’s a soulful feel to the slow and careful read of “Equinox” and a dainty dash n “Dolphin Dance”. Some classy soul pop is served on “ Tell Me A  Bedtime Story” and “Nardis” has a Sunday morning feel. Two reads of “Til We Meet Again” have Baldwin singing and playing in Stevie Wonder fashion. Dad had good taste!
