With his trio including drummer Yoron Israel and the legendary bassist Avery Sharpe, pianist Andrew Wilcox gives a tribute to his inspiration Andrew Hill, best known for his adventurous harmonics and sophisticatedly complex compositions. This album does not have Wilcox attempting to imitate Hill at all, but simply tip the hat in thanks. In fact, Wilcox has fairly easy swing, as displayed on “Muri Woods” and the bouncy read of “Stella By Starlight”. His solo take of “Hoh” is richly ruminating, while he drives well on “Onyx Warrior”. Sharpe and Wilcox supply a firm foundation on the intricate take of “Old Devil Moon” and rumble on a reflective “Mary”. An easy hill to climb.
