Tenor saxist Scott Gilman brings together Gary Fukushima/p, Trevor Ware/b, Abe Lagrimas/dr and Joe De Leon/perc for a collection of Old School soul jazz moods. There’s a nice funky feel to pieces like One Night At New York” and “The Deep End” with Fukushima’s keys and the soft warmth of “Ripple Effect” lays well with Ware’s bopping line, as well as on “When I See You”. Gilman has a rich and palpable tone, reminiscent of Sonny Stitt, as on “October” and the free-bopper of “Almost Home”. No glitz, no ‘roids, just the real deal.
