Philip Weberndoerfer: Tides

So, for the sake of my fingers, the first thing I need to do is to praise guitarist Philip Weberndoerfer’s latest album without having to write his name too many times. Forming a quartet with Richard Mikel/b, Peter Traunmueller/dr and Dayna Stephens/sax, the leader’s tensile, thick and clean lines create a wide variety of portraits, ranging from a reflective “Low Gravity” teamed with Stephens’ soprano, to an easy swinger of “Simple Task” with Stephens on alto. In a trio format, guitar and bass create a post bop pastoral mood on the delightful “Little B’s Poem” , with “My Ideal” glisten with passionate calm, and “One of These Days” flowing in understated style. Weberndoerfer doesn’t impress by chops, but by flavors. This one’s quite tasty.
