Juan Megna Group: Mariwo

Drummer Juan Megna creates an album of mostly originals with a flair of Afro-Cuban themes with a simpatico team of Tedd Baker/ts, Shawn  Purcell/g, Jose Luiz Martins/p-key, Leonardo Lucini/b and some guests. David Sacks brings in his trombone for some bold textures as on the tricky “Fara Ogunja” featuring the leaders snazzy sticks, as well as “Mariwo” with Baker’s tenor in the lead with the rhythm section digging in. Lucini lays down a slick line on the rocking “Pao” with Baker charging out on the volcanic “The Owl”. Martins’ piano is lovely on the folksy “Si Esuvieras” with Alison Crocket adding luscious voice on the exotic “Coisa No 2”. Original traditions that work up a sweat.
