27 year old Colombian born keyboardist and soprano saxist Jesus Molina puts together a fusion album similar to Chick Corea’s RTF or Electrik bands. He’s got chops and ideas to burn, and each song is a complex collection of concepts, making the core team of Guy Bernfeld/b, Cain Daniel/dr, Lucia Micarelli/vi and guests like Kyle Zimmerman/ts Rock Choi/g, Dave Mann/sax Eric Byers/cel , and Hubert Laws/fl work overtime.
All of the pieces have big and dramatic sounds, with hyperactive ivories on “Selah” and a sizzling Carribean feel with Laws on the upbeat “Dear Fall”. Vocalist Noel Schajris is rich on the energetic “Soul Journey” featuring some wild bass work by Bernfield, while Lucia Micarelli brings lush yearnings alongside the violin on “Melody” and the synth fest of “Blue N ew Year”. A dash of Emerson Lake and Palmer is felt on the prog-ish “Cal” and “Out Of A Dream”. Things are bursting at the seams all over, but always better the error of enthusiasm than the wisdom of indifference.
