Vintage hard bop is supplied by trumpeter Jack Wlrath and his quintet of Abraham Burton/ts, George Burton/p, Boris Kozlov/b and Donald Edwards/dr on this collection of originals performed at Smalls Jazz Club back in April 4, 2023 Walrath, a alumnus of the Charles Mingus School of jazz, is strong and bold throughout the set, driving hard on the stop start of “Roadkill” and slinky along Kozlov’s bass line on “A Bite In Tunisia”. The horns swerve like slot cars on the bopper “Grandpa Moses” and veer around Burton’s ripples on the thoughtful “Mood For Muhal”, with the rhythm team digging in on “Sacrifice”. The team stretches out with the leader plunging into deep waters on “Left Turn on 86th Street”. An impressive night out, with some good Mingus Moves.
