Florian Willeitner: What The Fugue

The trio of Florian Willeitner/vi, Ivan Turkalj/cel and Alexander Wienand/p meld modern jazz and Bach’s fugue into a new art on this recent release.

There’s a cleanliness and order to pieces like “Tigran’s Prelude” and “Fugue in E” that give hints of classical music, but also to bands such as Oregon or Paul Winter’s Consort, with a lyricism yet improvisational freedom. There’s a dreamy darkness to the five part “Dimensions” that gives hints of Bartok as well as to Back, with the strings bringing in hovering shadows and colors. Pieces actually titled as fugues have palpable textures, as on “Fuge in E” and the intricate “Fuga in Odd” with the pulses cantering into a rich gallop. Chamber’d charms.
