Emaginario: Interlude of the Duende

Is it “world”? Is it “jazz”? Whatever it is that Emaginario (aka Ethan Margolis) is playing on the guitar on this album with Larry Grenadier/b and Eric Harland/dr, it sure is exciting. You’ve got a Baker’s Dozen pieces, and they’re all energetic, deft and filled with ideas that bubble over. Grenadier and  Harland give a tasty undercurrent for folky pieces like “Beginning With A Groove”, with the drummer setting the stage for some intricate picking on “Del Tambor”. The strings chime on “A Beating Heart” and get rambunctious on the Brazilian flavored “Continuance”, creating rich harmonic chords for “Roaming”. Bold dynamics prevail as on “Peace in Tragedy” while well chosen notes are on display on a deft “Del Duende”. When’s he hitting LA?
