Pianist Dred Scott creates sizzling Latin pulses akin to vintage George Shearing on the bouncy album with Tom Beckham/vib, Matt Pavolka/b and Moses Patrou/perc. Shearing’s own “Cali Mambo” is given a peppy reading with the chiming of piano, vibes and percussion creating a sizzling sensation. The percolation is hand in glove perfect for Afro Cuban bop hits like Dizzy Gillespie’s “Manteca” and “Guachi Guaro”, and even the usually mellow “Poinciana” and a postmodern read of “You And The Night And The Music” are successfully given an injection of the samba juice. The team glides through a delicious read of “Star Eyes” and takes a breather on Scott’s romantic original “ Lulu”. All throughout, the quartet skips like a stone thrown on a lake, creating rich ripples with each bounce.
