BLUES AND ROOTS…Eden Brent: Getaway Blues, T Bear: The Way Of The World, True Blues Brother: The Legacy of Matt ‘Guitar’ Murphy

Hues of blues…

Eden Brent plays a honky Tonkin piano, Rhodes and Wurlitzer with her team of Bob Dowell/b, Rob Updegraff/g and Pat Levett/dr on this collection of 8 bar beauties. She’s got a great rasp to her voice as well, sounding kind of like Jay McShann in drag on “Getaway Blues” and doing a slow burn on “Watch The World Go By”. She has two step fun on “Just Because I Love You” and gets Monkish on “Rust” while her organ grinds nice and slowly on “You On My Mind”. Who let  her off her leash?

Legendary blues guitarist Matt ‘Guitar’ Murphy is given a two disc tribute on this passionate salute. The album starts off each disc with  himself on a thrilling “Matt’s Boogie” and “Matt’s Shuffle”, but after that, guitarists, singers and pianists tip the hat, with six stringers including Nick Adams, Bill Mills, Ronnie Earl, Joe Beard, Neal Vitullo and Craig Rawding, while Tom Hambridge drums and sings on a rhriving “Jack Rabbit Boy” and Kenny “Blues Boss” boogies on “Way Down South. Some tunes like “Shake a Tailfeather” have swampy horns, while “You Wasn’t Doin’ Too Good” is just guitarist Beard and Billy Boy Arnold on harmonica sittin’ and grinnin’. Thrivin’ on a blues riff.

T Bear sings and plays keyboards with Laurence Juber/g and Tony Braunagel/dr along with a slew of guests on this mix of rootsy rockers. Free man Paul Rodgers teams up with violinist Ada Pasternak on a rich “Red Harvest” w hile Bear grinds out a boogie on ”The Way Of The Word”. Hints of Dr. John are felt on the Crescent City “Your  Husband’s Got A Gun” and the calypso’d “Dinner For One” while 50s ballads dim the lights on “Before the Fall”, and a soul stirrer gets hip on “Sign On The Dotted Line”. Right place at the right time.
