Back in the 1950s and 60s, vocalist Julie London carved out a career by cooing out soft and seductive albums for the late night crowd. Lauren Henderson goes one better than nurse Dixie McCall, as she even composes her own material, all flickering candles of intimacy, teamed with the understated team of Joel Ross/vib, Sean Mason/p, Jonathan Michel/b and Joe Dyson/dr. The restrained whispers are almost palpable, wafting over the subtle percussion and vibes on pieces like “Fuego” or the crystalline “Illumination”. Mason gives some Asian harmonics on the wafting “Shadows” and Henderson adds somber voices to an almost liturgical “Sombras” with Michel felt as much as heard as on the shadowy “Dignidad”. A vocal journey down noir alley.
