One of the most important bands to bring the sound of the church was The Staples Singer, with cross-gene songs of social and spiritual liberation including “Respect Yourself” and “I’ll Take You There”. This concert from 1980 in South Africa comes at a time when the band was still addressing political issues of the day, namely apartheid, at the epicenter. The team of Pops, Cleotha, Yvonne and Mavis are in excellent form and spirit her, with the music funky and up beat, with an emphasis on keyboards rather than rhythm guitar, as in the old days. The team works around a funky bass line on a take of “Ease On Down The Road” from the musical The Wiz and Pops preaches it on the intro to “Come Go With Me” and “Will The Circle Be Unbroken”. Mavis is fervent on “Why Am I Treated So Bad” and hits hard on “Respect Yourself” with the band testifying on “Touch a Hand, Make A Friend”. God’s love always wins over man’s anger.
