Papo Vazquez’s Afro Puerto Rican Jazz Band : Songs Del Yucayeke

Trombonist Papo Vazquez creates earthy Afro Puerto Rican sounds dominated by percussion provided by Carlos Maldonado, Reinaldo DeJesus, Jose Claussell and Alvester Garnett with strong voices from Jose Mangual and the chorus of the Mighty Pirates, Ivan Renta/ts, Rick Germanson/p, Ariel Robles/b and various guests. Vazquez’s horn is bold and strong alongside Renta on the extroverted “NYP 9 Hudson” and the funky “Funny Money”. Mangual’s lead vocals are strong and confident on the salsa’d ”Dos Tito’s” mambo and joins the bold chorus for boogalooing “El Alcalde del Barrio”. The rhythms turn into an avalanche on the climactic collection of “Dond Esta el Amor” leading to the tribal “End Percussion Jam”. Earth tones for dancing.
