Giovanni Guidi: A New Day

Pianist Giovanni Guidi leads a quartet of James Brandon Lewis/ts, Thomas Morgan/b and Joao Lobo through pastoral originals and a standard. Lewis’ tenor is filled with cirrus clouds, yearning on “Cantos”, sighing around Morgan on the ruminating “Only Sometimes” and reassuring on “Wonderland”. Guidi creates stalactite tones with Morgan on the delicate “Means for a Rescue” and is graceful around Lobo’s brushes on a skating “Luigi (The Boy Who Lost His Name”, while “My Funny Valentine” is a gorgeous interplay of weaving teamwork. Pastels of sound.
