Lyrical mastery of the flute is displayed by Cobus du Toit, creating wondrous duets with pianists Amanda Harberg or Doreen Lee on this collection of modern classical pieces. Except for the recitation of voices that serve as a poetic teaming onNathan Hall’s “A Room of Quiet”, everything here has a chambered atmosphere. A three part “Court Dances” has Harberg giving joyful support for a bouncy woodwind on the first movements, finally ending up with a playful chase. Du Toit glows with Lee on the hovering “Sarabande for th Days of the Sundog” while a threesome of tunes from Paul Hanmer go from stately “Bamako” to a more exotic “Beira” and dark “ Bokmakierie” with bold brushes. Most melodic is Felipe Salles’ “From The Rooftop” which has the two mixing musings from Asia and South America. Modernity without cacophony.
