Bob Mover & Walter Davis Jr.: The Salerno Concert

A vintage recoding of alto saxist Bob Mover dueting with pianist Walter Davis in Salerno, Italy back in 1989 just got released, and it’s a classic mixture of Old School artist. The sound is a tad distant, but the energy and professional comradery more than makes up for it. The two take on bop standards, which is comfort food for these guys, with Davis’ hands stretching out like Bud Powell on hipster tunes “NIca’s Tempo” and the sizzling ‘Donna Reed”. The stop and start of “Salt Peanuts” is something that you can only do if you grew up with it, while Mover soars on “Bird Feathers” and agonizes on “You Don’t Know What Love Is”. These two play like they drank deep from the wells of the jazz icons, not like today’s artists who dabble here and there, and produce only dribble.
