Playing piano, Rhodes and moog, Adam Hersh brings together Evan Abounassar/tp, Devin Daniels/as, Andrew Renfroe/g, Jermaine Paul/b and Myles Martin/dr for a night of music at LA’s Sam First Bar. Except for Herbie Hancock’s “Toys” (which has some bold horn work, all of the tunes are Hersh’s own. Hersh, Daniels and Abounassar are somber on the fusion “Parallel Motion” and assertive on a plugged in “Concessions” . Paul and Renfroe swing hard on the relentless “ Everlasting” , with the leader in a soul groove mood on”Tornado Watch” , and clean as a whistle on the post bopping “Woe V Shade” and a yearning “Do What You Will”. A more subtle atmosphere is soft and fluffy for “In The Midst”, making for a night of wide ranging colors at LA’s best sounding jazz club.
