Tomasz Stanko Quartet: September Night

Trumpeter Tomasz Stanko built a career creating moods akin to Miles Davis’ “Blue In Green”, with rich kind of blue ideas floating to cerebral pulses. This release finds him in a September 9, 2004 gig in Munich with his classic team of Marcin Wasilewski/p, Slawomir Kurkiewicz/b and Michal Miskeiwicz/dr. The mood throughout is blue and somber, Stanko sighing on “Hermento’s Mood” and elegiac around Kurkiewicz on “ Theatrical”. The rhythm section is emotive and able to change dynamics at the flick of a wrist,as on the dramatic “Elagant Piece” with Wasilewski sounding in a Hancock mood on “Kaetano” and agitated on the stirring ‘Euforila” while somber under Stanko on the meditative “Song For Sarah”. Stanko was a master of pastel impressions, and this concert was a walk through Givenchy.
