Baritone saxist Dave Schumacher goes front and center with his band of Josh Evans-Jesus Ricardo/tp, Pater Brainin/ts-ss, Manuel Valera/p, Alex Ayala/b, Mauricio Herrera/perc and Joel Mateo/dr on this Afro Cuban collection of tunes. Evans and Schumacher burn a hole in the carpet on “Smoke In The Sky” and the reeds sizzle on “You Know It’s Wrong” Schumacher gets big bold and bluesy on “Caridad” and relaxes on “(No More) Smoke In The Sky”. Braini’s tenor is voluminous on the bopping “Cal Massey” and the percussion creates an avalanche on McCoy Tyner’s “Walk In The Spirit”. Watch out for falling rocks!
