Playing keyboard, piano, accordion and hammered dulcimer, Chuck Owen creates rural Cumberland Gap tones with a team of Sara Caswell/vi Jack Wilkins/sax, Corey Christiansen/g, Mark Neuenschwander/dr, Danny Gottlieb-Matt Wilson/dr, guest vocalist Kate McGarry/voc and a cameo horn section. The feel is a mix of Nashville and Tedeschi-Trucks with McGary rich and bluesy around the slide guitar on “Spinning Wheel” and rural on the open plains on “Can’t Remember Why”. Christiansen sits on the back porch with McGarry on “Omaha” with the horns adding a kind of choral effect on “We Rise”. Wilkins tenor blows embers on the elliptical “Magic Light” and Caswell’s violin teams with the leader for a crystalline dark sky on “Apalachicola”. No city lights for miles.
