Pianist Jill McCarron has a confident post bop feel on this album with a core trio of Paul Gill/b, Andy Watson/dr and a handful of guests. With Vincent Herring on tenor and alto sax, the team gets hip on the bopping “The Jody Grind” and sleek on “Monaco” with leader and saxist going bel canto on “My Shining Hour”. Randy Brecker is warm on the poppish “The Whisperer” with the threesome getting modal on the original “Bitters”, bluesy with brushes on “Gin” and pulsating around McCarron’s wide stride on “Luck of the Draw”, all a part of a creative “The Gin Suite”. Digits that dig.
