STRINGS AND SWING…Ian Carey & Wood Metal Plastic: Strange Arts, Stephan Crump: Slow Water

Strings that swing…

Trumpeter Ian Carey teams up with a strings section of Mia Bella d’Angelli-Alisa Rose/vi and Jessica Ivry/cel, along with Liza Mezzacappa/b, Jon Arkin/dr and Kasey Knudsen/as for some loose and abstract originals. The strings add to the depth of “Rain Tune” and support the leader on a rich tribute on “I Still Remember Clyfford Still”. Knudsen adds to the softness of “Set for 7: Choral” with the team getting abstract on “Sink/Swim” and pungent on “Set For 7: Alien Anthropology”. Frisky formats/

Bassist Stephan Crump brings together a string team of Joanna Mattrey/va and Yuniya Edi Kwon/vi along with vibist Patricia Brennan and Jacob Garchik/tb and Kenny Warren/tp for a collection of soft originals. The horns are sustained for pieces like “Outflow” and “Sound (Brackish” and the vibes are gentle on the subdued “Bogged”. Things get abstract and intuitive for “ Hyporheic” and “Dusk Critters” with gentle trombone work glowing on the pastoral “Beno”. Understated agitation.
