Known for his work with the likes of Lou Reed and Alice Cooper, Steve Hunter releases a solo album where he plays just about every instrument, supported by his dark and ominous voice. The collection of tunes and arrangements are quite eclectic, including a cleverly percussive clip-clopped take of Jimi Hendrix’s “Up From The Skies” as well as a slow and rural backroads take of Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane”. A funky take of Bill Withers’ “Who Is He And What Is He To You” had dirt under the nails, while there’s an urban folk feel to The Rolling Stones piece “Waiting On A Friend”. Hunter’s electric guitar is gritty on “Back Door Man” and he picks and grins on his own dark “The Ballad of John Henry Gates”. A walk on the wild side.
