Drummer Adonis serves up an impressive trio of his own, and brings in a ringer for most of the album in a guest vocalist.
For the instrumentals, Rose guides Ryan Hanseler/p and Lex Warshawsky/b through a sleek modal rounder of “I Still Think She’s Pretty” and bopping read of Mulgrew Miller’s “Second Thoughts”. WThe ringer of a singer takes over the stage, and is a presence to be dealt with, giving hints of Billie Holiday and Chet Baker, oozing romance on “I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face”, getting delicate and dainty with her tender vibrato on “For All We Know” and creating shades of blue on “You Go To My Head”. She’s peppy with Hanseler on “You Taught My Heart To Sing” and clear while flexible for “So Many Stars”. Who let her off her leash?!?
