Singing like a chanteuse and playing the accordion, Juliet Varnedoe mixes a Cajun world view with swing on this bohemian ep. She mixes and matches with Jon Dryden/add, Ben Ruben/b-perc, Arnt Arntzen/g, Clark Gayton/tb0tub and Dennis Lichtma/cl through a mix of mostly originals. The lone exception is a synthy pulsed chasson read of Sidney Bechet’s “ Petite Fleur”. Besides that, you get an early 1950s R&B meeting Zydeco on “Sing High Sing Low” and the waltzing poppish “Far & Away”. Sounds akin to a Film Noir make you put on your fedora on “Mon Cheri” with some Left Bank chicka booming on “Old Spot”. Bon Ton Roulet!
