Dayna Stephens: Closer Than We Think

Playing a variety of saxes and EWI, Dayna Stephens takes  his team of Emmanuel Michael/g, Kanoa  Mendenhall/b and Jongkuk Kim/dr through a collection of tunes that emphasize atmosphere and environment. Michael’s guitar is a  major presence, forming effects and backgrounds of ambience that float as on “The Nomad” and tensile “Bubbly” on which the leader’s tenor breezes around. Stephens is puffy and soft on “Placate” and plods through “Blue Poles” while radiating on “A New Spring” With trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, the team digs in for a respectably pulsed read of “ESP” , with Mendenhall featured on the abstract “TE”. Sonic drapery.
