David Bixler: BEATitude

Alto saxist David Bixler  puts the “beat” in “beatitude” on this album of originals with his mates Jon Cowherd/p, Ike Sturm/b and Rogerio Boccato/perc. Bixler’s tone gets warmer each album, wondrously relaxed on the hip “Balm” , palpable on “A Power Defered” and a dash elliptical on the patterned “ Clement”. Sturm and Boccato create a soft atmosphere for the leader’s fluffy ideas on “I Spy”, with the team showing dark sides on “Hide Seek Find” and the slightly abstract “Lost Hours? No”. All of the solos feel like part of the composition, with Cowherd guiding the traffic throughout, as on the graceful “Down Up” . Full team effort.
