Drummer, leader and arranger Dan Pugach puts together a modern sounding big band with four trumpets, four trombones, five woodwinds, and four team rhythm section and vocalist Nicole Zuraitis. You can feel Pugach’s presence throughout , with his cymbals gouiding out in front on pieces like the upbeat “Tolerance” and coll bopping Masa”. The team grooves well under Dave Smith’s trumpet on “Discourse This” and guitarist Pete McCann digs in with bassistSam Weber on “Dreams”. A blue Note Hard bopper like “Schleppin’” with Zuraitis giving expressive vocals on “Travel”. The sections work well in creating moods for this listenable mix of modern ideas.
