Better known for rocking the blues, guitarist John Basile pulls back a bit on this album with David Finck/b, Carmen Intorre Jr and Kevin WInard/perc, giving sensitive reads to (mostly)standards. There’s a classy nimbleness to “Girl Talk” and a calm restraint on Cy Coleman’s “See Saw”, with “ Like A Lover” retaining it’s bossa nova charm, but in hints with the shifting stands more than in statement. There’s a bit of Wes Montgomery bop to “Tear it Down”, with Finck digging in deep and stretching out a bit. Basile relaxes with patented patience on “For All We Know” and closes out the album by blowing out the candles on a reflective “Countenance”. Like the best of artists, Basile has learned not only what to play, but what to leave out, showing that implications can tell more than direct orders. Casual conversations.
