Pianist Mina Cho mixes modern jazz with traditional Korean tones with a team of Yeongjin Kim/dr, Max Ridley/b and bringing in Insoo Kim for some folk instruments such as the janggu, jing, aoie-buk and kkwaenggwari. The exotic instrumentation is an extra flavor, and is used judiciously as on the swinging “Nach Song with some vocals, while the waltzing “A Bit OF Grace” has pretty piano and delicate percussion. There’s a Brubeck-ish feel throughout doming from Cho’s fingers, particularly on “Beat Mirage” and the reflective “Prints of Imperfection”, with some eerie mist floating on “Parallel Destiny”. Sweet and pungent sounds.
