The Afro-Semitic Experience: Our Feet Began To Pray

This two disc set by the Afro Semitic Experience can easily be divided into tribes, both united by a call to God and cry for freedom. The first cd by jWarren Byrd/p-voc, David Chevan/b-voc, Saskia Laroo/tp-el-voc, Will Bartlett/cl-ts-voc, Alvin Carter Jr/dr-voc , Orice Jenkins/g-voc and a four member choir is the more “African” tribe, with a black gospel feel throughout. “Unity in the Community” has a Sunday Morning feel, and “Brighter Day” has Laroo and Byrd playing from the pulpit.

Disc two is the “Israeli” tribe, with a bit more of a klezmer feel to the proceedings. There’s a passionate chant on “Rakmones Nign” followed by a festive instrumental, with a dash of gospel included on “If I Can Help Somebody”. All of the singing is filled with passion and conviction, showing that music is one of the ways man can communicate with not only God, but with each other.
