Returning to it’s early days idea of mixing and matching kindred spirits in various settings, Blue Note Records brings together long time friends Gerald Clayton/p, Immanuel Wilkins/as, Joel Ross/vib, Kendick Scott/dr and Matt Brewer/b for a mix of group-conceived originals. The tried and true concept works well here, with both group and individual personalities coming forth. Ross’ vibes simmer around Scott on “Synchronicity” with Clayton in a Herbie Hancock mood with some wondrous chords and harmonies on the h ip “Radical”. Brewer and Wilkins glide around an abstract and hovering “Second Day” with the latter getting pretty around Ross’ dainty mallets on “Gabaldon’s Glide”. Dark marimba’s bounce on the grooving “Ofafrii” and the unit is serene on “Bird’s Luck”. Where’s the Francis Wolff photo?
