Matthieu Bordenave: The Blue Land

Playing tenor and soprano saxes, Matthieu Bordenave leads a quartet with Florian Weber/p, Patrice Moret/b and James Maddrem on a collection of impressionistic pastels. Bordenave’s soprano is misty with Weber on”La Porte Entrouverte” and serene during “Cyrus”, with some agitation provided by Maddren on the tulmutuous “Timbre”. On tenor, the mood is somber with Maddren’s m allets on the rubato of “Three Peaks”, Monkish for the cadence of “Distance” and the team is particularly abstract on the foreboding “The Blue Land”, with Bordenave sighing in desperation on the gasping “Retraction”.
