Since I first saw him back in the days when he was a member of the Akiyoshi-Tabackin Big Band, alto saxist Jim Snidero has always impressed me with his delivery and style. On his own, he’s built up an impressive and consistent catalogue. This time around, he goes into the tri format with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Joe Farnsworth for some light as a feather delivery of standards. He’s delicate and yet declaratory on “Parker’s Mood” and gives a whimsical attitude to “Love For Sale”. Washington creates a rich frame of strummed support on a moody “Naima” with Farnsworth’s brushes assuaging a misty “You Go To My Head”. As always, Snidero lures you in with his exquisite tone, glowing on “For All We Know” and a calm use of the upper register on “My Funny Valentine”. Why does this guy never hit the Best Coast?!?
