Rob Susman plays trombone, keyboards, percussion and something called the “theremin” as he lead a team of Chris Hemingway/as-ss, Stan Kilian/ts, Maximilian Schweiger/bs, Seneca Black-Chris Anderson/tp, Jane Getter/g, Dan Asher/b and Uichi Hirakawa/dr through some post bop originals and a standard. Of the latte, Susman is warm and soulful on the R&B classic “When A Man Loves A Woman, while the rest of the time, the band sounds like a revved up Tower of Power as on the big and bold “Tastes Like Chicken” featuring Schweiger. Hints of the group Chicago have some hip horn section work on the grooving “East Side Infirmary” and the team gets a bit spacey on a Mwandishi-tpye of “Out There”. Funky soul.
