Martin Budde: Back Burner

Guitarist Martin Budde proves the adage that the best way to create your own sound is to write your own material. He does both well on this trip album with Ben Feldman/b and Xavier Lecouturier/dr, with the sole cover being a richly harmonized read of Joni Mitchell’s “My Old Man”. . He’s deft on the indi-folk mood of “Parker Peak” and is clear as the morning sun on the rural “Eye To The Sky”. The rollicks with Lecouturie on the strong “Consensus” and is cool as a cucumber gliding around Feldman on “Eyak”. He forms subtle grooves nuanced throughout “ Back Burner” and is fluid on the flowing “Red”. A rare unique voice that deserves attention.
