Chris Rottmayer:  Being

Pianist and composer Chris Rottmayer leads a classy quartet with Russ John son/tp-fh, Matt Endres/dr and legendary bassist Rufus Reid on this latest release. You can detect the passing of baton from teacher Mulgrew Miller on this release, as there is a rich mix of style and substance throughout. The team is off to the reaces on “Chatelet” while cruising like a  V8* on the crisp “Re-United”. Endres’ cymbals are coaxing along with Reid on the tip toed “Ballerina Dance” with Johnson glowing throughout, particularly on the dreamy “ Pigalle”. The trio goes to work with Reid in the lead on “Autumn Evening” and Rottmayer bouncing around Endres’ sticks on the crisp “La Seizieme”. Reid gives a lesson on bowing for “ Song of Modes” and the team digs deep on “Rue des Lombards”. A simmering session.
