Frisky and free sounds from today and a past age delivered from No Business Records. Hold on tight!
Consisting of Rodrigo Amado/ts, Goncalo Almeida/b, Onno Govaert/dr and Eve Risser/p, The Attic is recorded in Lisbon in 2023 for four songs of intuitive originals. “Amado delivers long tones on the avalanche of “Peu” and delves into deep magma after Risser’s intro on”P hrase” Govarert and Almeida go from groove to splatter on “Corps” and give hints of bop on the wayward “Pierre”. Where’s a cop to direct traffic when you need one?
Pianist Joel Futterman delivers a three song 2024 recorded album of “Innervioce” with the parts ranging from 34-3 minutes. All three pieces begin with the same two notes, and after that it’s off to the grey matter for ideas. “Part One” has a mix of pretty tones and Cecil Taylor, while “P art II” scrambles around like morning eggs and “Part III” swirls like swarming bees. Two notes and a million directions.
Bassist William Parker joins with alsto saxist Hugo Costa and drummer Philipp Ernsting for three tones on this 2023 collection of group improvisations. Parker introduces a shrill “Pulsar” while setting the groundwork for a frazziling “Fogo em Escalada” that explodes upon contact. Ernsting gets the spotlight on the thunderous and catastrophic “Words of Freedom” that rumble like the Great Sand Francisco Earthquake of 1906, complete with fire. Richter Scale sound.
Alto saxist Arthur Blythe is found in 1976 with Juini Booth/b, Muhammad Abdullah/cong and Steve Reid/dr for four wild and wooley originals. He solos with exhilaration on “Spirits in the Field” before hitting the ozone layer with the band on the screeching “Medley of Unidentified Titles”. Booth is dark on the bluesy “Miss Nancy” and the rhythm rumbles on the gloomy “Lower Nile”. As cohesive as mercury.
